the Bancroft way . . . putting patients first
Over the years the composite filling materials have taken the place of the old fashioned mercury amalgam that we routinely used in dentistry. These modern materials are adhesive to your tooth and so help add strength to your tooth but they also have great aesthetic qualities.
It is artistry to see a front tooth built up and restored with composite materials, quite a skill that our experienced team of dentists have.
From small fillings to large replacements of parts of a broken tooth, composites are so versatile and look great too.
At Bancroft Dentistry in Hitchin, we use several different types of crown. How we choose which crown is needed depends on several factors, the position of the tooth, the strength of the bite in that area, and personal preference. Most commonly we use a tooth coloured material for the crown which may be porcelain or eMax which is a modern version of porcelain.
A crown is needed when the a tooth is so badly broken down that there is not enough structure to adhere the filling material too or the tooth may be discoloured or dark and to get great aesthetics porcelain is required. Teeth are prepared for crowns and then an impression taken which goes to our very skilled dental technician. Our technician will then construct your crown in their laboratory and then return to us for cementing in place.
Crowns are permanently fixed in place and give strength and super aesthetics, thesy are usually completed in two appointments.
Onlays and inlays are constructed in the same way as crowns are, in the dental laboratory by our skilled team of technicians. They are used when part of the tooth structure is lost but not all. They are cemented into place in the dental surgery and will give many years of service with the correct hygiene advice and maintenance.
They are generally made of a tooth coloured porcelain material but personal preference may be for gold and this can be accommodated. Gold inlays and onlays have the same preparation time in the surgery and fitting time, all requiring two appointments.
Root canal treatment involves removing the central nerve and blood supply of a tooth where the infection has set in. Once removed the empty canal is disinfected and then sealed to prevent reinfection and then the tooth can be restored.
We are fortunate at Bancroft Dentistry to have access to several pieces of modern technology that help vastly improve our treatment outcomes for endodontics. Firstly a CBCT scanner can deliver a 3D image so we can be certain of the anatomy of quite complex root structures. Secondly we use the latest equipment to cleanse and shape the root canals with digital measuring devices to ensure filling to just the right depth.
All this means that root canal treatment is a much better tolerated treatment by our patients with more certain outcomes. Gone are the days where this was a painful drawn out procedure. This is great news for us and our patients as it means we can save more teeth than ever and avoid a dental extraction.
