Dental Hygienist

The key to dental hygienists is that they work closely with our whole team in helping YOU get your gums in perfect health!

Your dental hygienists will help you achieve that level of dental health by removing the plaque and calculus which can lead to gum disease and tooth loss – with their expert care you’ll get great fresh breath and a clean bright smile.

We are lucky in that we have a team of caring, gentle hygienists (who won’t shout at you if you’ve not flossed that day!) – they are in on every day of the week and some Saturdays.

Great dental health equals better general health and our team of dental hygienists help you on this road to improvement.

They can help you to:

Achieve a healthy-looking mouth and the fresh breath that goes with this

Maintain professionally cleaned, debris-free teeth

Keep your gums pink and healthy so they don’t hurt or bleed while brushing or flossing

Avoid tooth decay, gingivitis, periodontitis, and all forms of gum disease.

Help make sure your teeth can last a lifetime – with all the associated benefits of improved confidence, clear speech and comfort when eating

Eliminate the need for costly dental treatments

Tooth Coloured (Composite) Fillings

White or tooth coloured fillings are called composites and are made from a mixture of glass particles and resin and are very much the way of the future for fillings!

They are the natural successor to silver amalgam fillings (we haven’t used amalgams in years at Bancroft Dentistry) – constant research into materials now means that white fillings can be made very strong and resilient to tooth wear.

As it remains a much more techniques sensitive procedure, all our dentists have been on many postgraduate courses to perfect white fillings for you.

The end result is a filling which merges into the tooth beautifully and becomes very strong in the few hours after it was finished.

There are different types of composite filling depending on where they are being placed – High wear for teeth at the back and higher gloss for front teeth where aesthetics is more important.

The main feature of these fillings is their ability to look like the tooth they are replacing as well as bonding to the tooth so that more of the original tooth can remain.

Composite Bonding

Composite bonding offers a solution for minor damage or gaps in front teeth

Bonding is usually used for filling chips, fractures or gaps between teeth, or for fixing discolouration. A composite filling is attached to a tooth and shaped to restore its original appearance.

It is often used in place of porcelain veneers as it is much less destructive (it adds to the tooth rather than drills tooth away), it’s also less expensive and can be repaired, replaced or added to easily!

It can change the shape and colour of your front teeth incredibly effectively and can be used in conjunction with whitening to for maximum effect.

Sometimes composite bonding can be used only on the tips of the teeth to correct minor chips and cracks due to wear – results can be amazing!

Anti-Snoring Treatments

White or tooth coloured fillings are called composites and are made from a mixture of glass particles and resin and are very much the way of the future for fillings!

Modern anti-snoring devices are designed so that you can sleep with them and we have many patients that testify to how good they are!

They work on repositioning the lower jaw slightly to allow a better passage of air into the lungs and give you and your partners a good night’s sleep.

Teeth Grinding, Jaw Clenching, and Mouthguards

We all lead stressful lives! Particularly after the lockdowns of the Covid outbreak we have seen evidence of a lot more clenching and grinding in our patients.

The level of pressure people put on their teeth when grinding and clenching can sometimes be up to 8-10 times normal biting pressure leading to worn teeth which ages your smile and broken or fractured teeth.

Worn teeth can be treated with composite bonding (see above) but to prevent this happening wearing a night-time guard is the best defence. (most damage is done at night which is why it can be difficult to self-diagnose)

Ask your dentist or hygienist to check your teeth for excessive wear and they can advise you the best way to stop things getting worse.

Most often, we start patients on small mouthguards to assess their compatibility and move on to a fuller guard if we feel better protection is required.
