Stoptober – Because there’s only one you!

Stoptober – Because there’s only one you!

It’s the time of year again when nights are getting colder, darker, and longer. Fortunately, to every con is a pro! Personally, I love cozy evenings in by the fire wrapped up warm in my favourite jumper.

It’s the time of year when people’s thoughts start to drift more towards the dreaded ‘C’ word. It is too early to say it, but you know the one I mean – the one that signifies the arrival of the friendly house invader with the beard and red and white suit. Laughing merrily as he encourages us to spend our money, but (hopefully) leaves us some nice gifts in return.

However, before that, it’s the time of year when people all around the country participate in Stoptober. The annual event for those who wish to quit smoking.

Now don’t worry, I’m not going to get on my (admittedly non-smoking) soap box and start preaching about the evils of smoking! Nor am I going to tell you that you must quit immediately or face certain death, or worse… all your teeth will fall out!
Because, while it is an important part of our roles as dental professionals to inform you of the effects of smoking, it isn’t our job to judge you for your life choices. And it is unlikely that anyone would want to read a blog that did just that!

I am simply going to tell you a little bit about Stoptober, then the rest is up to you!

This blog post may not be for everyone…

If you smoke and are wanting to quit, then it may be just what you need to help you. But, for example, if you don’t smoke then it would seem obvious that you are not my targeted reader at this time. However, maybe you know someone who would appreciate the information and you could help by passing it on.
Similarly, if you smoke and have no intention of stopping, then you may feel like it is not worth the read. I would ask you to read on anyway, just for future reference. Or again, maybe you might know someone to whom it would be of benefit.

So, enough of the waffle, let’s get to the point..!

What is Stoptober?

Stoptober is an event for people who smoke and want to quit which runs for 28 days during October. Organised by Public Health England, it has been a massive success with more than 1 million smokers signing up since it started in 2012. It offers the ways and means to help people stop smoking.

Why is it so successful?

A large part of its success is down to how quick and simple it is to register to participate in the event, after all no one likes complicated forms to fill in! As well as the website, there is also an app, daily emails, and the offer of one-on-one support if required. With famous faces joining in each year, it uses the power of social media to spread the word and give people easy access to help and motivation when they need it most. Just knowing there are other people sharing the same experience and struggles as you can be invaluable in getting you through the tougher times.

Some people even decide to seek extra incentive by asking their friends and family to sponsor them, but it is not a requirement of the event.

Why 28 days?

While it’s not an exact science, evidence suggests that you can make or break a simple habit in around 21 days. Further evidence suggests that if a person can quit smoking for 28 days, they are up to 5 times more likely to give up for good.

Like I said before, I’m not here to tell you what you should or shouldn’t be doing, we all have our vices and ways of de-stressing! Everyone who smokes will decide if or when is the right time for them to quit, and have their own reason for doing so. While it can be done at any time of year, Stoptober provides a lot of additional support that can be the extra boost you need.

And just think of the cash that could be saved up and put towards parties, treats and maybe even some gifts during the festive period. (Nope, still not going to use the ‘C’ word yet!)  As well the extra bonus of not having to go outside on those cold and rainy nights!

And don’t worry if you haven’t started on the 1st of the month, you can join in and start your 28 days as soon as you’re ready!

Of course, you can always speak to your dentist and hygienist here at Bancroft Dentistry for advice on stopping smoking.

Good luck!
