Dental sedation is a magic tonic that can help you completely relax during a dental procedure.

We’ve helped countless patients overcome their fear of the dentist with dental sedation; it’s also ideal if you’re about to undergo a lengthy dental procedure and want to zonk out during the process.

Quickfire Guide To Dental Sedation

  • Treatment Type: sedative to help nervous patients relax during dental treatment.
  • Benefits: places you in a completely relaxed state.
  • Process: administered using a cannula (a tiny needle) on the back of your hand.

What Does IV Sedation Do?

IV (intravenous) sedation is a conscious form of sedation – you won’t be put to sleep, you’ll just feel incredibly relaxed the moment it kicks in.

IV sedation has been successfully used for multiple decades, and it’s a powerful weapon against anxiety and deep-seated fear of the dentist.

Once you’re under sedation, you’ll be completely unaware of your nerves and hang-ups about the treatment ahead. It’s also very common for patients to remember very little (or even nothing) of their procedure.

Once you’re under IV sedation, we will administer local anaesthetic at the treatment site. If you’re someone who really doesn’t like dental anaesthetic, this will be music to your ears, as you’re unlikely to remember the anaesthetic being administered.

Experienced Sedation Dentists In Hertfordshire

We, at Bancroft Dentistry, pride ourselves in taking an unhurried approach and gentle, caring attitude to how we work.

We have been performing IV Sedation for dentistry at this practice for over 30 years, helping patients get the dentistry they need and want, but who have been too nervous to go that extra step.

We’ve helped literally thousands (no exaggeration!) of patients using this technique, and we’re now a well-known referral centre for patients who want to undergo a procedure under sedation (only a small number of practices offer IV sedation in our area, and we’re one of them).

FAQs

How will I feel after the sedation wears off?

Patients often ask us if they will feel ‘groggy’ like after going under general anaesthetic.

One of the best things about IV sedation is that it has very little ‘hangover’.

You won’t feel groggy, just a little drowsy, and you’ll feel fresh the next day after a good night of rest following your procedure.

You’ll need someone to take you home after your procedure, as the IV sedative will still be wearing off.

Can I have IV sedation with any procedure?

Yes.

IV sedation can be used for pretty much any dental procedure – even check-ups!

We recommend IV sedation if you:

  • Are afraid of the dentist.
  • Are undergoing a long procedure.
  • Have a strong gag reflex.

Are there other ways to overcome my nerves?

In many instances, simply chatting with you and asking you about the origin of your dental phobia can unlock confidence and mutual trust – you might not even feel you need sedation after this conversation.

For many people, overcoming their fears is simply about developing a rapport with the dentist, which they may never have had in the past.

For others, just a single treatment performed under local anaesthetic can be enough for them to never need it again in the future – we’ve seen this time and time again.
