What are GBT and Airflow®?
GBT (Guided Biofilm Therapy) and Airflow® are protocols designed to deliver hygiene-based treatment in the least invasive way possible and to raise awareness of prevention.

Benefits of GBT and Airflow®
Our experienced hygienist team is led by Juliette Reeves, who has trained extensively in delivering minimally invasive hygiene-based treatment using the innovation the GBT method and equipment has to offer.
This system is beneficial to our patients in the following ways:
- The GBT system is clinically proven to reduce the amount of biofilm present on your teeth, and in preventing regrowth.
- The Airflow system removes staining and calculus in hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. This is carried out using a mixture of water, powder particles and air.
- Highly effective for cleaning around appliances like braces (reducing the possibility of decay and gum disease during orthodontic treatment).
- A gentle treatment that’s suitable for patients with sensitive teeth.
- Identifies where hidden plaque and tartar are located. Your dentist will use a Biofilm Discloser to show you which areas of your teeth you’re neglecting when you brush (this is a little like how UV light exposes the presence of certain liquids).

How is GBT/Airflow treatment different from a normal hygienist visit?
As part of the GBT process, the biofilm (plaque and tartar) present along your gum line is highlighted to you at the very start of the appointment. This step is to help you understand how hidden biofilm is affecting your tooth structure.
Your hygienist will coat your teeth with a special liquid designed to reveal any plaque present. This step is hugely beneficial to patients, who otherwise wouldn’t have a tangible understanding of how bacteria is affecting their teeth.
This educational element sets the GBT method apart from your routine hygienist treatment. The second difference is the use of Airflow polishing, which is a method of eliminating plaque and tartar in hard-to-reach areas of your mouth (like in between your teeth and at the back of the mouth).
Is the cleaning method painful?
GBT and Airflow have been developed to be pain-free. Each process used was rigorously tested to ensure a gentle experience for patients, with a view to encouraging more people to attend hygienist appointments and reduce their gum disease risk.
